2 / 14 Emmanouil Saratsis: site analysis

This workshop was our second experience at MIT, collaborating with the introductory urban design studio. For the second time we worked on Boston Waterfront, taking advantage of the previous research to achieve perhaps more ambitious goals.
In this occasion we analysed more in depth the socio-economic drivers of the development and explored multiple future scenarios for the harbour and the adjacent urban fabric, considering alternative evolutions of the local and global economy and how these could affect the urban morphology.

3 / 14 Emmanouil Saratsis: primary spine and urban cells

Students developed a parametric model of the area that could adapt to quite different spatial conditions through multiple typological deformations at different scales. The model was then tested in its ability to address changes on the macro structure, shifting the overall functional balance to make the future development match new economic targets.
In this sense, parametric tools were used both for their ability to generate flexible and yet specific formal outputs and at the same time for their efficiency in dealing with large databases, establishing complex relationships between multiple layers of information.
